How can I get to and clear out that area?

  • 1 of 22: From near where you can see it, look for a narrow, winding stone bridge that goes across the immense chasm.
  • 2 of 22: Past that is a long and winding tunnel, followed by a narrow ledge that'll take you near the thumper.
  • 3 of 22: Don't drop down to the thumper area right away. Instead, stand at the end of the ledge and use the gravity gun to hit some nearby antlions.
  • 4 of 22: Move back behind your vort pal and push him forward so that he'll see the antlions and zap them.
  • 5 of 22: After he gets a few, he should drop down and go after the rest of them. If not, help him out by grav-blasting any antlions that come within range.
  • 6 of 22: Before you drop down, look for supply crates and other items on top of structures near the thumper. Use the gravity gun to pull on them until they drop down to the floor. (The zoom feature can help you see some of the smaller supplies, like boxes of ammo.)
  • 7 of 22: Also, there are two zombies you can deal with before dropping down. One is lying on the other side of the thumper, and the other (a zombine) is reclining to the right of the large shed that's beyond the thumper and to the left.
  • 8 of 22: Shoot them with your pistol to get them up, and hopefully the vortigaunt will zap them for you.
  • 9 of 22: One last thing you may need to do before dropping down is to go back and get any armor batteries you dropped into the tunnel earlier and come drop them into the thumper room.
  • 10 of 22: After you drop down, go straight to the thumper, but no farther. There's a trigger point just before the first set of tracks past the thumper that'll wake up all the surviving zombies and call in some more antlions. You don't want to do that yet.
  • 11 of 22: From next to the thumper, look for three more sleepy zombies and one zombine who are lying around ahead, near the big metal ramp that leads up to a small control booth. (One's on the ground to the right of the ramp, and the other three are on the platform past the ramp.)
  • 12 of 22: Shoot each one once with the pistol to get him up so that the vortigaunt will zap them.
  • 13 of 22: There's another zombine a ways to the right of the ramp that you should shoot, too. It's kind of hard to see, since it's next to the tall metal structure over there.
  • 14 of 22: Look for a regular zombie to be lying just outside the shed near the thumper that has a supply crate, a body, and a generator in it. Don't go near the supply crate or body, but shoot the zombie from near the thumper to get him up.
  • 15 of 22: That's about all the prep work you can do, so get out the gravity gun and pull in a nearby explosive barrel.
  • 16 of 22: Move onto the first set of tracks and be ready to throw your barrel at the antlion worker that'll come out from behind the shed that's ahead and to the left.
  • 17 of 22: Hopefully, the barrel will blow up the worker and most of the other antlions, and your vort won't have to zap very many of them.
  • 18 of 22: After that, go all around the area, looking for a few leftover antlions and zombies to kill.
  • 19 of 22: When the area looks clear, return to the thumper and find either one of the two ladders near it.
  • 20 of 22: After you climb one of those ladders, there'll be a poison zombie staggering around on the ground below.
  • 21 of 22: Quickly run across the nearby metal beam and drop down onto the second floor of the shed that's over there. You can get some supplies and hide from the poison zombie up there.
  • 22 of 22: If your vortigaunt is slow about seeing and zapping the poison zombie, you can drop to the ground and take cover behind the vort in order to get him going.
