Half-Life 2 Hints

Improved Lighthouse Rocket Strategy

  • 1 of 15: Dorian wrote in recently with an interesting variation on my old Lighthouse Rocket Strategy that I like even better than the original.
  • 2 of 15: What you do is park your jeep so that it's almost all the way inside the garage, but not quite. The back of the jeep is sticking out just far enough to prevent the resistance guy from closing the garage door.
  • 3 of 15: You'll have to leave the garage by squeezing past the jeep and going out the doorway you drove in through, but that shouldn't be too hard.
  • 4 of 15: Since the jeep isn't fully parked inside the garage, you have some time to look around and prepare.
  • 5 of 15: After raiding the houses at the base, head over to the lighthouse and set up the door-blocking crates as specified in the above-mentioned original lighthouse rocket strategy. (You probably won't need this barricade to keep soldiers out, but you might as well put it up just in case.)
  • 6 of 15: Run up to the lighthouse roof and get out your RPG.
  • 7 of 15: Fire rockets at the back of the jeep until it gets knocked into the garage far enough for the garage door to close, signaling the start of the attack.
  • 8 of 15: Quickly run back downstairs to fill up on rockets, then return to the roof and start rocketing the first dropship as it appears on the horizon.
  • 9 of 15: The idea here is that it's now possible to destroy each container before it can offload any soldiers, even though each container takes four rocket hits to destroy.
  • 10 of 15: Following are some speed tips (also contributed by Dorian) which will help make this possible.
  • 11 of 15: Memorize where each dropship first appears. In some cases (like with the first dropship), you can fire off a rocket before the dropship actually appears, then steer the rocket into it when it does appear.
  • 12 of 15: When you're refilling on rockets, you don't have to stand next to the crate until the rockets appear in your inventory. You can start running back up the stairs to the roof the instant you open the rocket crate.
  • 13 of 15: You can fire off a rocket while running up the stairs as long as you aim it up at the sky, then steer it into its target when you reach the top of the stairs and can see to guide it.
  • 14 of 15: When the third and fourth dropships get to where they can shoot you on the roof, don't retreat back down the stairs, but instead crouch at or near the top of the stairs. That's usually enough cover to keep from being shot much, and you can keep firing those rockets.
  • 15 of 15: It may take a bit of practice, but you should be able to perfect this strategy to where you can destroy all of the troop carriers before they can offload any soldiers.
