Half-Life 2 Hints

Stand in the Case Strategy

  • 1 of 9: The soldiers will start coming in right after you get the second sentry gun from its case and set it down. ("Second" meaning whichever one you do second -- it doesn't matter which exact one it is.)
  • 2 of 9: The soldiers will try to run up to the control room from either side using the stairs, so place one sentry gun to face the top of each side staircase. (No soldiers can come up the stairs you used to get to the control room area, so there's no need to cover those.)
  • 3 of 9: Don't put the sentries too close to the staircases, though, or the soldiers will have a better chance of knocking them over.
  • 4 of 9: You can optionally put the green file cabinets and other moveable items in the control room between the sentry guns and the stairs to help prevent soldiers from reaching the guns and knocking them over, but that's really not necessary if you place the guns properly.
  • 5 of 9: The safest place for you to stand during combat is inside one of the sentry gun storage containers. If you're in there, the manhacks that occasionally appear can't sneak up behind you.
  • 6 of 9: If a sentry gun does somehow get knocked over, make a quick run to its location and pick it up. Give it a shake or two, and it'll automatically right itself in your grip so that you can set it upright again.
  • 7 of 9: At various points, a soldier will appear on the raised walkway on the other side of the force fields and release manhacks.
  • 8 of 9: You can see his walkway through some of the control room's windows, but not if you're hiding in a storage container.
  • 9 of 9: If the battle never seems to end and no more soldiers show up, this is undoubtedly the one that you haven't taken down yet. Stand near the windows until he appears, then shoot him with the pistol. (If you stand far enough back, you'll be able to shoot him in the legs without him shooting back.)
