Half-Life 2 Hints

How can I avoid getting killed by the hunter-chopper?

  • 1 of 15: Avoid being shot by its powerful cannon. That's what it kills you with.
  • 2 of 15: You can hear the whine of the cannon's power-up every time it's about to fire, so either seek cover or sprint wildly around to avoid taking too much damage.
  • 3 of 15: Read on for a step-by-step strategy for minimizing your pain while you run for the door that you need to get through.
  • 4 of 15: Slide down the left side of the slimy ramp, then sprint forward and jump onto the rubbish pile that's straight ahead.
  • 5 of 15: Specifically, jump onto the spot between the two large boards and the roundish white metal thing.
  • 6 of 15: Run down the other side of the pile and crouch down behind the large slanty piece of metal sheeting that's stuck in the ground just past a bit of bent fencing.
  • 7 of 15: It may take some practice (i.e., restoring a save and trying again), but you should eventually be able to make it behind the metal sheeting right before the chopper fires off its first barrage.
  • 8 of 15: Rest there until your auxiliary power is fully recharged, then make a break for it just before a round of chopper fire stops -- that'll give you maximum time to run before the firing starts again.
  • 9 of 15: You're heading up to the door with the barrels stacked near it, and the way to get there is to find the opening in the railing that runs along a narrow walkway.
  • 10 of 15: When you're ready, sprint from your cover to the rail gap, then run along the wall to avoid being grabbed by an inconveniently placed barnacle.
  • 11 of 15: If you're fast enough, you'll make it to the door and can crouch behind the barrel stack right before the chopper lets loose with its next barrage.
  • 12 of 15: Don't just crouch there, though -- as soon as you get there, grab the barrel that's in front of the door and toss it aside.
  • 13 of 15: WARNING: Chopper fire may also knock some barrels from the stack around so that they get in front of the door, so be ready for that.
  • 14 of 15: As soon as there are no barrels between you and the door, open it and run inside. Safe! (For now.)
  • 15 of 15: ALTERNATIVE: After you run up onto the rubbish pile, don't run down its other side -- instead, get onto the nearby narrow cement ledge and take it to where you can run across some long and skinny wooden planks. That'll get you to the door faster, but you won't be able to take cover from the first chopper barrage, and it might even break the planks before you get across them if you don't run and jump fast enough.
