Half-Life 2 Hints

Thumper Approaching Strategy

  • 1 of 13: Staying in the large pond, look at the dock structure to see if there's another way to get up onto it besides the ramp-like walkway that's near the thumper.
  • 2 of 13: You see that large beached boat that's over to the right of the thumper and the walkway ramp?
  • 3 of 13: Its lowest end is fairly near the edge of the water, with very little dry sand in between.
  • 4 of 13: So run out of the water and jump onto the boat's lowest end.
  • 5 of 13: If you do this while crossing the minimum amount of dry sand, no antlions should spawn.
  • 6 of 13: Make your way carefully along the boat's right side as it slants upward toward the front end.
  • 7 of 13: From there, you can take a running jump over to the wooden walkway that's just ahead.
  • 8 of 13: WARNING: It may be tempting to head over to the nearby white shed and then onward, but trust me -- you'll regret it later on.
  • 9 of 13: Go halfway down the wooden ramps that lead down to the sand near the thumper, then make a running jump straight toward the thumper.
  • 10 of 13: Turn it on and immediately start running around it, using it as cover while blasting back any antlions that get too close.
  • 11 of 13: When the thumper's fully on and the antlions have given it a respectful radius, run for the pond and make your way back to the jeep.
  • 12 of 13: Blast the jeep all the way across the pond and onto dry sand near the thumper. (This avoids an antlion-provoking drive around the pond's perimeter.)
  • 13 of 13: NOTE: I know all that was a lot of work, but it's the best way to make it onto the Northern Petrol dock structure while taking the least amount of damage (which is none at all if you're fastidious about quicksaving frequently and retrying whenever you get damaged by anything).
