Combat in the Dark Tips
1 of 9: If you brought any sentry guns with you from the previous area (even two would do), take them through the doors and set them up as quickly as you can.
2 of 9: Put them all in the area just past the doors and around the corner, then retreat back to the doors for cover and be ready to set any sentries upright that get knocked over.
3 of 9: As for Alyx, she should be fairly good about taking cover frequently, and having two or more sentry guns helping out should be enough to keep her alive without you having to do any shooting.
4 of 9: If you didn't bring any sentry guns with you, it's too late to go get them now (they'll have reverted to being hostile to you). You'll have to restore a save from before you entered this chapter section if you decide you want some.
5 of 9: If you're sentry-less, stay near the doors and break cover frequently to help Alyx shoot the soldiers as they approach. (Ideally, you'd start shooting down the hall every time Alyx retreats to reload.)
6 of 9: Grenades, rockets, and pulse rifle energy orbs can really help finish them off quickly when they're clustered together, so look for opportunities to use those.
7 of 9: Also, you can throw junk at soldiers using the gravity gun if you don't mind getting a bit closer to them.
8 of 9: Or you can hang back and only briefly peek out every now and then to fire off a few shots, hoping that Alyx will survive long enough to finish off most of the soldiers. You'd definitely better save before trying this, since she may get killed.
9 of 9: CAUTION: The battle isn't over until Alyx says "Come on!" and runs down to the other end of the hallway and up the stairs. If she hasn't done that yet, look for soldiers hiding down at that end of the hall. (Carry your sentry guns down there if you have them.)
