Half-Life 2 Hints
How can I destroy ground turrets?
of 11: With explosives.
of 11: That includes frag grenades, SMG grenades, and RPG rockets.
of 11: Frag grenades are usually the best choice due to their plentifulness (especially in the nearby supply room), though the other two options will give much quicker kills.
of 11: To get a ground turret to where you can destroy it, you or a member of your team will have to cross the turret's blue laser alerts.
of 11: This causes the turret to pop up and start scanning the floor ahead of it for non-Combine targets. (Note that you can see its scan lines as they move across the floor.)
of 11: Turrets deactivate and sink back into the floor after a few seconds of not finding any targets. It's only during the time that they're up and scanning or shooting that you can destroy them.
of 11: The best thing to do is stand where the turret can't see you and carefully roll a frag grenade so that it falls into the turret's little floor niche.
of 11: When that's not possible (like when the turret pops up facing its laser alerts in a narrow corridor), you can quickly blow it up with an SMG grenade or RPG rocket.
of 11: Or you can try to run past it or block it.
of 11: You can often just run past a turret without taking much damage, especially if you can activate it and then wait under cover between it and its activation beams until it shuts down again. You can then run safely past it, but note that your team will get shot up a bit while following you.
of 11: The "block" method involves using a large yet moveable and indestructible object to block the turret from hitting anyone. This isn't possible at first, but once you reach an area with large moveable desks, you can start using the gravity gun to move desks right up against turrets so that even if they're up and firing, they'll only hit the desk.
