Half-Life 2 Hints
Strider
Health: special (see below)
Attack Damage: 5 from bullets and instant death from warp cannon and stomp
First Seen: Anticitizen One, Section 3 (first fought in "Follow Freeman!", Section 5)
These are the large and powerful tripod vehicles that tower above all ordinary foes. They're equipped with a powerful machine gun and a mega-powerful warp cannon that can kill you instantly with a direct hit. (However, all warp cannon blasts are scripted events, and don't usually put you in any danger.)
To destroy a strider, you have to hit it with 5 RPG rockets (Easy difficulty) or 7 RPG rockets (Normal and Hard difficulty). You can also hurt them with grenades and energy orbs, but each of those counts only half as much as an RPG rocket hit. Fortunately, you never need to use grenades or pulse rifle orbs on a strider, as there's always an infinite ammo crate with rockets somewhere nearby.
NOTE: You don't have to hit a strider in the "head" to damage it -- any hit on a leg above the joint will hurt it just as much.
