Half-Life 2 Hints

General Jeep Notes

  • 1 of 11: The jeep (otherwise known as the scout car or dune buggy) works similarly to the airboat, but with added frustrations. If you didn't like the airboat, I'm afraid you won't like the jeep any better.
  • 2 of 11: Well, except for the fact that it starts out with a powerful vehicle-mounted weapon called the tau cannon. You might like that.
  • 3 of 11: Not only does the tau cannon not have any pesky charge meter that runs out when you least want it to, but it also has an altfire mode where you hold the Secondary Fire key to charge it up, then release the key to get a single powerful blast that does up to 250 points of damage! (It's kind of like an infinite ammo version of the experimental gauss gun in the original Half-Life.)
  • 4 of 11: As with the airboat, you can use the zoom function while in the jeep, and can fire the tau cannon while zoomed. Note that the cannon's regular-fire mode isn't totally accurate over long distances, but the altfire mode is, making it the best choice for long distance zoom-shooting.
  • 5 of 11: Unfortunately, the jeep's headlights don't work, and you can't use your flashlight while inside it. Drive carefully in dark areas (or get out and scout ahead on foot first).
  • 6 of 11: Mounted in the back of the jeep is a small infinite ammo crate for SMG ammo. That means you can always restock on SMG ammo when you stop the jeep and get out, and should therefore use the SMG for most or all of your shooting while on foot.
  • 7 of 11: As for the controls, they work pretty much the same as for the airboat with the important difference that the strafing keys don't actually turn the jeep left and right -- they just turn its front wheels. You need forward or backward momentum to get a turn accomplished.
  • 8 of 11: A couple of useful additions are the handbrake (E key) and the turbo (SHIFT key). The handbrake can be used for quick stops, which is something you should practice doing so you get into the habit of using the E key when you're about to crash painfully into something.
  • 9 of 11: The turbo is used mainly for jumping ramps. (Yes, there's ramp-jumping with this vehicle, too.)
  • 10 of 11: Some added problems are that the jeep can't just easily glide up fairly steep inclines like the airboat could, but instead needs a good running start. Also, the airboat was impossible to overturn, but the jeep will overturn at the slightest excuse.
  • 11 of 11: Another annoying difference is that the jeep not only can't skim over deep water, but it will stall underwater.
