Half-Life: Blue Shift Hints
General Strategies
1 of 7: One of the most often useful strategies is sneak-shooting. This is the fine art of sneaking up on an enemy so that you're where you can see him, but he hasn't seen you yet, and indeed couldn't even if he turned around in place (in other words, you can't see his head). From that vantage point, shoot him with the handgun, .357, or some other single-fire gun. If a single shot doesn't take him down, he may or may not start running around. If not, it'll be easy to finish him off. If so, he may see you and go into combat mode. (If he doesn't see you, he'll just reposition himself, and you can probably sneak up on him again.)
2 of 7: When entering a new area, always save your game, explore recklessly, and then restore your game. You'll then be able to assault the area with a strategy in mind. (This and the following tip also make it unnecessary to have detailed maps of every single region in the game.)
3 of 7: Another way to scope out the starting positions of a group of enemies in an area is to use the Cheat Codes. Type "notarget" to make yourself invisible and "noclip" to allow you to fly around and view the region from the air. Once you're through scouting out the place, return to your starting location and type "notarget" and "noclip" on the console again to turn them off.
4 of 7: If this is your first time playing a Half-Life game, be sure to go through the Hazard Course and pay special attention to the jump-crouch and crouch-jump combos. There are many places in the game where you'll be stuck if you don't know how to jump-crouch over obstacles (jump, then hit the forward arrow and Crouch key quickly).
5 of 7: I always like to go under "Configuration / Video / Video Options" on the main menu and set the Gamma slider all the way to the right. That makes things easier to see in the game without having to go to the extreme of using the "r_fullbright 1" cheat.
6 of 7: Here's a tip on how to have some fun after you're finished playing through the game. Start a new game and use the "notarget" and "impulse 76" codes described in the Cheat Codes list to play through the entire game again, using spawned soldiers to do all or most of your fighting for you. This is particularly fun in areas with lots of aliens. It's also hilarious to set a bunch of soldiers in an area and then take notarget off just for a second to let them see you. Even when you're invisible again, they'll run around tossing grenades all over the place!
7 of 7: Another way to extend gameplay is to always use your crowbar to whack on dead bodies until they go splat! I think it's a lot of fun, and it takes awhile to do, especially on Difficult level.
