Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper Hints
How can I get the police bag open?
of 11: Click the hand cursor on the bag to get a close-up view of the opening mechanism, which consists of three knobs and six number displays.
of 11: Try clicking on a knob to see what happens to the number displays.
of 11: You'll find that each knob affects three of the six numbers.
of 11: The goal is to get the numbers in 1 to 6 order, with a 1 on top, a 2 and 3 on the middle row, and a 4, 5, and 6 on the bottom row.
of 11: NOTE: There's a "Reset" icon you can click on near the top right corner of the screen to reset the puzzle to its starting configuration at any time.
of 11: If you keep clicking on the top knob, you may find that you can't ever get a 1 in the top number slot. If you try this right after the puzzle starts (or gets reset), you'll only be able to get the numbers 2, 4, and 5 in the top number slot.
of 11: So try turning another knob, then see what all numbers you can get in the top number slot.
of 11: The deal here is that all of the numbers from 1 to 6 can only appear in one place at a time. If the number 1 is shown at the start of the bottom number row (as it is in the starting puzzle configuration), you'll have to turn the bottom left knob once and then the top knob once to get the 1 up in the slot it needs to be in.
of 11: It can be tricky trying to "juggle" the numbers around so they all end up in the right slots. You can't just do one knob at a time until you're done with it, and then move on to the next knob, without going back and forth between them.
of 11: Thankfully, the puzzle has a nonrandom starting configuration, so an exact step-by-step solution is possible. Read the next hint to see what it is.
of 11: After first starting or resetting the puzzle, turn the bottom right knob twice, the bottom left knob twice, the bottom right knob once, the bottom left knob twice, and the top knob twice. If you did it right, Holmes will say so, and the puzzle screen will close.
