Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper Hints

How can I open Tumblety's huge trunk?

  • 1 of 10: Click on the trunk to get a puzzle screen that has to do with battles of the American Civil War.
  • 2 of 10: There are five battles listed, and each one of them has six digits to the left of it that you can change by clicking on them individually. (Note that you can increase the numbers by clicking near the bottom of them, and decrease them by clicking near the top.)
  • 3 of 10: There are also flag and hat symbols to the right of each battle's name that you can click on to change. This is *quite* the combination lock, especially considering that most of the information you need doesn't exist anywhere in the game.
  • 4 of 10: Start with the ending dates of the battles. If you check along the bottom of the display, you'll see six dates listed.
  • 5 of 10: However, looking through them carefully will reveal that two of them are bogus.
  • 6 of 10: The 1771 and 1868 dates are out of range of the Civil War, which started in 1861 and ended in 1865.
  • 7 of 10: That means one of the five battle dates isn't listed, and you'll have to look it up somewhere.
  • 8 of 10: See below for all the battle date answers if you don't want to bother guessing or looking them up in an encyclopedia or Civil War reference.
  • 9 of 10: Next, you'll have to set all the hats and flags according to who won the battles. This part isn't too hard to guess at, since the metal locking bars to the right of the hats will pull back when you get the flag and hat settings right (assuming you already have the date settings right).
  • 10 of 10: See the answers below if you don't want to guess or look it up.
