1 of 2: Well, they ARE thieves, so they can hide in shadows, and deal annoyingly high amounts of backstab damage.
2 of 2: It helps to have your party members with lots of HP go forward and deal with them, since the thieves have an annoying tendency to attack the party members with the least HP.
