Icewind Dale II Hints

How can I get past the 4X4 array of large boulders?

  • 1 of 10: Select one character and try clicking on various boulders.
  • 2 of 10: This is a basic sliding tile puzzle, where boulders can be moved to adjacent empty spaces (if your characters aren't standing in them). One catch is that you can only move boulders left and right, never forward or backward.
  • 3 of 10: Your goal is to clear a path straight through that you can travel down.
  • 4 of 10: Be sure to save your game before you start experimenting with the boulders, since the following solution assumes the boulders are in their starting configuration.
  • 5 of 10: Think of the boulders as being on a 4-by-4 grid, with the columns labeled A (left) through D (right), and the rows labeled 1 (top) through 4 (bottom). That gives:

    A1   B1   C1   D1
    A2   B2   C2   D2
    A3   B3   C3   D3
    A4   B4   C4   D4
  • 6 of 10: The following step-by-step solution tells which boulders to click on in order, using the above grid coordinate system. Remember that they have to be in their starting configuration (with coordinates A2, B4, D1, and D3 being empty).
  • 7 of 10: Column C is the one that's going to be cleared by this solution. Start by moving boulders C4 and C3.
  • 8 of 10: Then move B4, B3, A4, A3, B4, B3, and B2.
  • 9 of 10: Now you can clear column C by clicking on C4, C3, C2, and then C1.
  • 10 of 10: NOTE: Watch out for more barbarians appearing and attacking throughout this boulder-moving exercise. Also, you'll be ambushed by a pack of wyverns after you're past the boulders.
