Character Development Tips
1 of 3: Go under "Options / Game Play" from the main menu and make sure that the "Max Hit Points Per Level" feature is turned on. If it isn't, your characters will receive a random hit point increase within a rather wide range whenever they level up.
2 of 3: If you choose to create a new party, you need to make sure you have one wizard or sorcerer, one cleric, one rogue, two fighters and/or barbarians (or monks), and one "free choice" (which I would fill in with a spellcasting fighter, like a paladin or ranger).
3 of 3: The higher your characters' levels, the less XP you get from any particular monster kill. Because of this, it's wise to not level up when you're in the middle of an area that you can handle at your current levels, because leveling up will reduce the XP you'll get from the rest of your combat in the area. The true XP-seeker will push as far as he can in the game at his current levels before giving in and leveling up. (Note that this can get *very* challenging, though.)
