Why is this story so weird?
1 of 2: This story has a lot more to do with the original fairy tales than their modern versions. Remember all those wicked stepmothers being punished with red-hot pincers and barrels lined with nails? Just pretend it's *really* the Dark Ages and survival is a day-to-day question and you'll have the right feel.
2 of 2: And don't forget that "Jazz & Faust" comes from Russia. In Russian fairy tales, "happily ever after" doesn't always apply.
