Journey: The Quest Begins Hints

Which powder is which essence?

  • 1 of 16: I hope you've been paying attention to what Praxix has been doing during the game.  If you haven't been, you're in trouble.
  • 2 of 16: Several times, when Praxix cast spells that mixed two essences together, a residue would be left on his hands.  (Or yours, when he had you cast Elevation on yourself.)
  • 3 of 16: Elevation (earth and air) produces one color of one consistency, Mud (earth and water) produces one color of another, and Flare (fire and air) produces still another color and another consistency of residue.  (That's why it is very important to note what color the residues are when they show up in the game, because, at this point in the game, there's no other way to learn it, if you don't already know.)
  • 4 of 16: The colors mix the same way as if you were mixing paints, but the consistencies mix differently.  If two essences of the same consistency are mixed together, they will produce a residue of that consistency.  (For instance, if you mix a fine essence with a fine essence, you will get a fine residue.)  If one coarse and one fine essence are mixed together, they will produce a medium-textured residue.
  • 5 of 16: Now, you need to use that information to determine which essence is which.  A sample solution follows.  (Note that the colors and consistencies of essences change every game, so yours may be different.)
  • 6 of 16: Suppose Elevation produced a medium violet residue, Flare produced a fine green residue, and Mud produced a coarse orange residue.
  • 7 of 16: Since Elevation produced a medium violet residue, you know that either earth or air is red, and the other is blue.  Consequently, one is fine and the other coarse.  Since flare produced a fine green residue, you know it is composed of fine yellow and fine blue essences.
  • 8 of 16: Since air essence is used in both Elevation and Flare, you can deduce that air essence must be fine blue.  (You know there is a fine essence, and a blue essence, in each.)
  • 9 of 16: Therefore, fire essence must be fine yellow (fine yellow and fine blue yield fine green).
  • 10 of 16: Since you know what air essence is, you also know what earth essence is -- coarse red.  (Coarse red and fine blue yield medium purple).
  • 11 of 16: Then, you can use the Mud spell to determine what water essence is.  Since the residue was coarse orange, and you know what earth essence is, you can easily determine that water essence is coarse yellow (coarse red and coarse yellow yield coarse orange).
  • 12 of 16: Using that information, you now know what the color and consistency of every essence is.  Then, all you need to do is mix the right combination of essences together.
  • 13 of 16: In this case, water (coarse yellow) and fire (fine yellow).
  • 14 of 16: Then, simply add a pinch of earth essence (coarse red, in this case), and the spell is complete.
  • 15 of 16: Finally, cast the mixture at the Dread Lord.  If you did everything right, you will win the game.
  • 16 of 16: Congratulations.  You have completed Journey: The Quest Begins.
