Which one is the unique ball in this instance?

  • 1 of 3: You began in the 2nd trial knowing that the unique ball was one of these: 1, 2, 3, 5 or 6.
  • 2 of 3: If your trays are EVEN after the 3rd weighing, these have all been ruled out: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.  Remaining are 3, 5 and 6.

    Your answer is 6 (it is lighter).  (Why?  3 and 6 were on the "Light" right side after the 2nd weighing.
    5 was with 1 and 2 (now proven okay) on the "Heavy" left side after the 2nd weighing).
  • 3 of 3: If your trays are UNEVEN, your answer is the HEAVY ball -- either 1 or 2.  (Why?  Because they were both on the "Heavy" tray after the 2nd weighing.)
