Journey to the Center of the Earth Hints

How do I lower the Floating Island? (aka the Leaf Puzzle)

  • 1 of 8: Save your game before beginning this puzzle!  If you have already tried it, I would suggest you restore to a point before you started and work forwards so you can have a new Save spot while standing on the path leading to the puzzle.
  • 2 of 8: No one can explain the reasonings behind this puzzle.  The Clues to the Leaf Puzzle make absolutely no sense.  In fact, I'd advise you to ignore them.  (If I discover new information contrary to this in the future, I will update this file.)
  • 3 of 8: Begin by just walking around the path going clockwise (left) from where you entered.  Look at everything here as close as you like, but don't click on anything until you get back to the beginning.

There are six totem poles arranged in a circle around a gaping hole in the center of the Valley.  There is also a large stone with a face carved into it.  The tongue on the face can be pulled out.

The object of the puzzle is to produce six sounds in a SPECIFIC ORDER.  If you make a mistake, you must start over from the beginning.  The puzzle does NOT reset when you leave it.

Touch two totems (closing the hole with the leaves) and then pull the tongue on the stone's face.  The sound will continue until you touch another totem, so YOU DO NOT NEED TO UNCOVER THEM.
  • 4 of 8: Beginning with the first pole (going clockwise around the circle), I named them A through E, but you can number them if you find that easier.  It helped me to examine at the tops of each totem and jot down a description of it.
  • 5 of 8: Pole A, for instance, looks like bottle; B like a baby bird's open mouth; C a lamp finial; D a 2-fingered prong; E a crown; and F a tall cylinder.
  • 6 of 8: The stone with the carved head and tongue sits in between C and D.  So, you'll be running back to it six times to pull that tongue each time you close two holes!
  • 7 of 8: Try not to be impatient.  Before backing away from a totem pole, wait for the leaf to completely close in front of the hole.  And ... the solution is: (in the next hint)
  • 8 of 8: Picture Version of the Solution
Close A and D (pull the tongue) or 1 and 4 if you numbered them
    Close C and E (pull the tongue) -- 3 and 5
    Close D and F (pull the tongue) -- 4 and 6
    Close A and E (pull the tongue) -- 1 and 5
    Close B and C (pull the tongue) -- 2 and 3
    Close A and F (pull the tongue) -- 1 and 6
