The only mistake you can make while talking to people is saying goodbye too early.
Ask about every topic each time you talk to someone. After you have explored more, be sure to go back and talk to them again to see if they have more to say.
The people you meet will almost always need a favor. When it is finished, you must go back and tell them you have completed it. This is sometimes the only way to learn about other things in the game.
