Keepsake Hints

Can you give me a step-by-step solution to the placement of gears?

  • 1 of 19: The logic regarding the placement of the first piece has already been discussed in the previous hint, so will not be repeated here.  The first square to be placed should be the one with three small half-gears -- bottom, top, and right.  To place this piece, click on both the piece with the three small half-gears and the square in the location where you want to move the piece (bottom row, second from left).  The pieces will swap places.
  • 2 of 19: The square to the immediate right of the first square is relatively easy to place.  Look for a suitable square with a small half-circle on the left side.
  • 3 of 19: There are only three.  One has nothing else on it, which cannot be placed there because that would end the chain of gears.
  • 4 of 19: A second square has three small half-gears on it, left, top, and bottom.  This one also cannot be placed to the right of the first square since the bottom half-gear would be placed against the edge of the puzzle.
  • 5 of 19: The proper choice would be the square with a large half-gear along the top edge and two small half-gears on the left and right sides.
  • 6 of 19: To complete the small gear in the bottom right corner, there are only two squares that have a small half-gear on the left, and since one of them has a half-gear that would be placed against the edge of the puzzle, there is only one choice left.
  • 7 of 19: Place the square with only a small half-gear on the left side in the corner at the bottom right of the puzzle.  Note: The solution, up to this point, gave detailed descriptions of the logic behind each move.  By this time, you should have a reasonable grasp of the logic involved.  If you would like to continue solving the puzzle yourself, this would be a good point to do so.  Beyond this point in the hints, the solution does not discuss the logic, only states the placement of the squares.
  • 8 of 19: Looking back at the square just over the first square placed, the correct square for this spot is the one with three small half-gears -- left, top, and bottom.
  • 9 of 19: To the left of this square, the correct square has a small half-gear on the right side, and two large half-gears on the top and bottom edges.
  • 10 of 19: For the bottom left corner, find a square that has a large half-gear along the top, and nothing else on the square.
  • 11 of 19: The square along the left side, second from the top, should have a large half-gear along the bottom and a small half-gear along the top.
  • 12 of 19: End this series of gears in the top left corner, by placing a square with a small half-gear along the bottom, and nothing else.
  • 13 of 19: The square in the second column, second piece from the top, should have a small half-gear along the bottom, and a large half-gear on the right.
  • 14 of 19: The square along the top row, second from the left should be completely blank of half-gears.
  • 15 of 19: The square in the third column, third from the top, should have two large half-gears along the top and bottom.
  • 16 of 19: The square just above the previous one (third column, second from the top) should have one small half-gear along the top edge, and three large half-gears along the bottom, left, and right sides.
  • 17 of 19: The square above the previous one (third column, along the top row), should have only a small half-gear along the bottom edge.
  • 18 of 19: Place a blank square in the top right corner.
  • 19 of 19: Complete the square immediately under the top right corner piece by placing the piece with the large half-gear on the left side.  The final square remaining (far right column, third from the top), should be blank.  Note: Correctly placing the gears is the first step in starting the main water pump.  Be sure to read on under "How do I restart the main water pump in the academy?" for the final steps.
