How do I solve the tile puzzle?

  • 1 of 11: Notice that some tiles on the floor are bright and some are dark?
  • 2 of 11: The goal is to make all the tiles on the floor bright.  There are four controls that affect the floor tiles, one in front of each "furnace".
  • 3 of 11: Each of the controls affects the floor tiles in a different way.  The one at the top right always deactivates one yellow square.
  • 4 of 11: The control to the bottom right always lights two red squares.
  • 5 of 11: The control at the bottom left moves a red light from one square to another.
  • 6 of 11: The control at the top left always turns two yellow squares on and one red square off.
  • 7 of 11: The tiles will reset to their starting position if you ask a control to activate more than six lights at a time, or to deactivate lights that were not on.
  • 8 of 11: It can be helpful to work out a solution on paper first.  Remember that the number of tiles activated (or deactivated) and the color are both important, but the position of a colored tile is not.
  • 9 of 11: Ignore the control at the bottom left (because it does not change the number of tiles activated).
  • 10 of 11: To begin, use the control at the top right to turn off a yellow light.  Do this three times, so that all the yellow lights are deactivated.  You should see a possible pattern now, to solve the entire puzzle.
  • 11 of 11: Use the control at the top left -- it will activate two yellows, while deactivating one red.  Do you see a pattern yet?  Continue working out the solution, one step at a time.
