The Elder Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine Hints

How can I get that gate open?

  • 1 of 15: Look on the floor next to the bedroll to find Drothan's Field Journal.
  • 2 of 15: Read it to learn that the task of opening the gate has to do with Dagon's champion.
  • 3 of 15: That's Msirae Faythung, the inanimate guy in the vertical coffin a bit to the right of the gate.
  • 4 of 15: If you click on Faythung, you'll be able to take his beating heart from his corpse.
  • 5 of 15: As Drothan's journal noted, you can open the gate by eating the heart.
  • 6 of 15: Find it in the ingredient section of your inventory and click on it in order to do this.
  • 7 of 15: When you do, Faythung will come to life and attack you, but will quickly die without his heart. Just make sure you're a ways back from him when you eat the heart so he won't be able to hit you at all.
  • 8 of 15: Other bad effects of eating the heart include a +4 to your Infamy stat, a special disease that drains your Agility and Intelligence, and the porphyric hemophilia disease. (SeeĀ  the vampirism section in the main Oblivion hint file for more about porphyric hemophilia.)
  • 9 of 15: Read on for some alternatives to eating the heart if you don't want to open the gate that way.
  • 10 of 15: You could ignore Faythung, click on the gate, and choose to try to force it open.
  • 11 of 15: If your Strength is 91 or higher, you'll be able to open the gate and claim the razor. If not, the gate will remain closed.
  • 12 of 15: In either case, Faythung will come to life and attack you.
  • 13 of 15: If you got the gate open, you can grab the razor and fight Faythung with it, hoping to get lucky and kill him before he can kill you.
  • 14 of 15: Or you can go through the door that opens up behind the razor when you take it and run along the escape passage, hoping you can leave Faythung behind.
  • 15 of 15: If you can't force the gate, you'll have to kill Faythung in order to get it open.
