The Elder Scrolls IV: Knights of the Nine Hints

How can I use the altars?

  • 1 of 9: The spellmaking and enchanting altars can be used to make spells and enchanted items, even if you haven't joined the Mages Guild and done their recommendation quests yet.
  • 2 of 9: However, they need some magetallow candles installed in them before they'll work, and you can only get those from Aurelinwae in the "Mystic Emporium" shop. (And they're very expensive!)
  • 3 of 9: Once you have them, click on the two altars to install the candles and get them working.
  • 4 of 9: As for the Atronach altar, it can be used to create Atronach familiars if you have the right ingredients.
  • 5 of 9: Void salts, frost salts, and fire salts are all ingredient items that can be found on dead Atronachs, which are most plentiful in the Oblivion worlds. You can also buy them from some ingredient sellers, and can find them in a few fixed spots.
  • 6 of 9: Once a familiar is created, it'll appear down on the floor below.
  • 7 of 9: You can talk to it and tell it to follow you, wait where it is, or be dismissed.
  • 8 of 9: In order to create a new atronach, you'll have to first dismiss the current one or get it killed somewhere.
  • 9 of 9: TIP: Not only are frost salts the ones most commonly available in fixed locations (see list above), but Frost Atronachs are the only type of atronach that can heal themselves. This makes them the obvious choice for anyone who doesn't particularly care which type they make.
