1 of 4: This probably means you're still in Story mode.
2 of 4: The game has two modes for each level, Story and Free Play. You need to play a level in Story mode through to the end first before you can do it in Free Play mode.
3 of 4: In Story mode, you get all the cutscenes and your characters are set. In Free Play, you get to pick some of your characters and you don't see the cutscenes.
4 of 4: There are lots of goodies (like canisters and studs) that require characters with special skills to access. (For example, high ledges need either a hyper-jumper like Jar Jar or a grappler like Padme to reach.) To get them, finish the chapter in Story, then do it in Free Play and make sure you have the Characters you need.
