Why are there three or four of some characters?
1 of 3: Um ... variety?
2 of 3: With the people this seems to be cosmetic only. That is, the Obi-Wan from Episode I doesn't have a beard and the one from Episode II does, but they have the same skills.
3 of 3: With the droids and clones, there may be subtle differences of power or endurance. That is, the Battle Droid (Commander) is harder to kill than the Battle Droid (Security).
