Is there any alternative to fighting these creatures?
1 of 3: Actually, yes there is. If you don't want all of the rewards (i.e., the extra level of fighting/mage skill), then you can just get this part of the game over with in a battle or two -- assuming you can avoid any stray monsters lurking around.
2 of 3: When you go to your sponsor's home territory, you will have a chance to attack them directly.
3 of 3: If you so desire, select "attack" and battle on. You'll get the most important item -- the key to Scotia's castle.
