Avoid fighting guards directly.
1 of 4: You don't need to fight every guard that you see.
2 of 4: For example, when you're on the bridge on the way to the Draracle, just outrun the guards and open the door to the Draracle without ever fighting them. (The manual seems to indicate this won't work, but I never had a problem.)
3 of 4: There's also one guard standing in a very dangerous location.
4 of 4: One that you can see through a narrow passageway is standing on a pool of oil. Use a spark spell to ignite that pool and the guard will be killed. You'll also gain some extra experience versus fighting the guard directly.
