Mass Effect 2 Hints

PC Cheats

  • There's apparently no standard console-like thing available in Mass Effect 2, so what's a rabid cheat-o-phile to do? There are basically two options available. One is to get a trainer program (like the one on www.cheathappens.com) that runs in the background and provides cheat-oriented keypresses in-game. The other is to find a way to edit the game's Coalesced.ini file to give yourself cheat keypresses and/or constant cheat effects. It's easy to find in the "Mass Effect 2\BioGame\Config\PC\Cooked" directory on your install drive, but not so easy to edit since it's not a plain-text file.

If you want to go the Coalesced.ini way and don't have a good hex-editing program to use on it, you could check the Mass Effect 2 message boards on www.gamefaqs.com for a lot of posts about how to edit the file or obtain edited copies of it. Another option is to email me at dunigase@yahoo.com and request one of my edited copies of Coalesced.ini. Say in your email whether you want a copy that gives you infinite ammo for all weapons, a copy that makes your shields regenerate super-quick, or a copy that does both. Also be sure to tell me the latest patch version you have installed, since patches change the file.

IMPORTANT: Before you do anything to your original Coalesced.ini file, whether it be editing or copying in an edited version, be sure to make a backup copy of it. You can put it in the same directory and call it "Coalesced backup.ini," or something like that. A badly edited Coalesced.ini file will prevent the game from running at all, so it's good to have a backup of the original that you can copy over any messed-up version -- or over a non-messed-up version if you later decide to stop using whatever cheat effects it gives you.
