Mass Effect 3 Hints

Morality Tips

  • 1 of 7: The paragon-and-renegade morality system is back in Mass Effect 3, along with a new generic "reputation" value. To make things confusing, all three are thrown onto the same bar scale instead of having separate meters for each one.
  • 2 of 7: As before, you can earn paragon ("charming good guy") and renegade ("bullying bad boy") points from certain actions and conversation options. You can also now earn generic reputation points in the same ways.
  • 3 of 7: During conversations, pay close attention to the right-side dialogue options, since they're the usual way to earn paragon and renegade points. The upper option is usually the paragon option, and the lower one is usually renegade-related. Note that not all the right-side options you get in every conversation will give you morality points, especially if they're in a set of "investigate" topics.
  • 4 of 7: Also watch for morality "interrupts" to happen during conversations when someone else is talking. These work like they did in Mass Effect 2. When the indicator for an interrupt appears on-screen, you have a short amount of time (sometimes very short) to hit the correct button to take the interrupt. If you miss it, you'll sometimes get an interrupt of the other type a bit later, but not always.
  • 5 of 7: On the PC, paragon interrupts display a blue mouse symbol near the bottom right corner of the screen, and require you to right-click. Renegade interrupts (red mouse symbols) appear in the bottom left corner of the screen, and require you to left-click. It probably works similarly on other gaming platforms, with the only difference being what you click or press for each interrupt.
  • 6 of 7: Your paragon and renegade scores will come in handy during certain conversations. Watch for options printed in blue and red on the left side of the dialogue wheel. The blue ones are options that your paragon score will let you use, and the red ones are ones that your renegade score enables. (Note that if your paragon score is too low for a paragon option, it'll be grayed out, and clicking on it will do no good. The same goes for renegade options.)
  • 7 of 7: You should always get as many generic reputation points as you can. As for paragon and renegade points, you should decide early on which one you prefer to get most of the time, and then always choose that when you have to choose one or the other. If you try to even things out, there may be some later-game conversations where you can't use any of the paragon- or renegade-score-dependent dialogue options.
