Mysterious Journey II Hints
How do I know what the bottom row of buttons is?
of 16: This becomes increasingly difficult, especially since one of the buttons is missing. But maybe we can derive what we need to know from what is already there.
of 16: Do you recognize any of the buttons in the bottom row?
of 16: The first button matches the "unknown" symbol on the crate containing the code for the third panel.
of 16: We need to figure out what it does on the calculator.
of 16: What happens when you press a button in one of the top 3 rows?
of 16: The same number appears in the red display.
of 16: Now try something else. Press one of the buttons in the top 3 rows -- remember that these buttons represent the numbers 0-11 in base 12.
of 16: Press the first button in the bottom row. (Nothing happens to the display... yet.)
of 16: Now press another button from the top 3 rows. How has the display changed?
of 16: Carefully decipher the number that is now displayed in the readout. How does it relate to the two "number" buttons you pressed?
of 16: A simple example (which may be easier to decipher) is to press the button that represents "1" (the second button in the top row -- remember, they start with 0). Then press that lower left button, then the same button as you started with -- the second button in the top row.
of 16: You've pressed 1, the "unknown" button, and 1. What does the display read?
of 16: You should see the representation for "2" in the display.
of 16: Continue to try this with other numbers.
of 16: You should find that, in each case, the result displayed in red is the SUM of the two number buttons you pressed.
of 16: The lower left button -- which matches the symbol on the last crate -- must be the "+" button on this calculator!
