About the Promotion Quests
For each of the nine different character classes, there are two different promotion quests. Each of the promotion quests will give characters of the appropriate classes a higher rank. You can take the first promotion quest (e.g., Knight to Cavalier) for each character type as soon as you find the person to give you the quest, but you can only get the second quest once you have chosen between Light and Dark (e.g., Cavalier to Champion or Black Knight). Light and Dark each have different secondary promotion quests. One of the two secondary promotions comes from the same NPC who gave you the first promotion.
The characters receiving the actual promotion will receive 30,000 XP for the first promotion and 80,000 XP for the second. These characters will also receive the hit points, spell points, and skill limits that come with a promotion. Other characters receive an "honorary" promotion that is worth half as many experience points. You can take promotion quests even if you don't have any characters in your party who will receive a real promotion.
