Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer Hints
Game Glitches
of 9: Don't you just love these things, at least when they don't crash or freeze the game? MM6 is still the undisputed King of Beneficial Glitches, but this game has its unfair share. Read ahead for the list -- some spoilers may follow.
of 9: Your reputation is only affected by donating up to 5 times at the various temples. That's it. Nothing else affects it, including completing quests and killing innocents. That way you can loot all the peasants without having to worry about a reputation decrease (and a resulting increase in shop prices).
of 9: Ich in the Dagger Wound Island area says that he requires you to have one of each of the best reagents in the game to promote Liches from Alchemy master to grandmaster, but that isn't true.
of 9: Also in Dagger Wound, Thistle asks you to bring the ingredients for a potion of Pure Speed, but what he really wants are the ingredients to a potion of Pure Might. If you bring them to him, he'll give you a potion of Pure Speed. I think he's trying to pull a fast one!
of 9: In Garrote Gorge, you can't complete Avalon's kill-all-dragons quest unless you kill all the ones in the Dragon Cave, even though you're only supposed to have to kill the ones along the north edge of the area map. Also, you can't finish Jerin Flame-eye's quest of killing all Dragon Hunters until you get all the ones in the Dragon Hunter's Camp. That doesn't sound like a beneficial game glitch, but it is because it encourages you to make the most of your Garrote Gorge conquest.
of 9: In every cave that has them, the Dragon Flightleaders and Great Wyrms mysteriously can't use their ranged attacks. Cool, but don't let them close to melee range or they'll rip you wide open in no time.
of 9: Sometimes, when you leave the Plane of Fire, the next outdoor area you go to will have a glowing red sky! It's just the game forgetting to recolor the sky, though. No biggie.
of 9: Here's a bad one. I once experienced game crashes constantly whenever I tried to view Devlin Arcanus. A bit of experimentation indicated that the problem resulted from him having a spell readied and then unreadied (and therefore ended up with no spell readied). Later tests in different saved games didn't reproduce this result, but if you get constant mysterious game crashes, this may be the problem. If so, try highlighting Arcanus and pressing C. If that works, then set a spell for him.
of 9: Another bad one involves the Arcomage game you can play in any tavern. Sometimes my computer froze when I started a new game of Arcomage. It was fairly random and rare, and I sure hope this doesn't happen to you, but be sure to always save in front of a tavern you intend to play Arcomage in.
