Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer Hints

Secret Capitalized Plants

  • Someone thought it would be real funny to put "special" plants in the game that give you something if you click on them with a selected character who has a certain number of points in the Repair Item skill. These plants are very rare and extremely hard to find, but over the years and with the help of other dedicated players, I've managed to find most if not all of them. I list and describe all the ones I know about below.

NOTE: The number in [brackets] at the end of each item is how high the currently selected character's Repair Item skill has to be in order to get the secret plant to work. The number listed is how many actual points have to be in the skill -- expert and master status don't count. If no number in brackets is listed, then there's no Repair Item requirement.

    * On Dagger Wound Island, there's a "Palm tree" that's very close to the caravan wagons where you start the game. Click on it to get a cheap reagent or empty potion bottle once.  [3]

    * Also on Dagger Wound is a "Flower" that's near the cluster of four treasure chests that's on one of the smaller islands that you have to teleport to using the teleporter stones. The plant is about halfway between the chests and the nearby huts. Click on it to get a one-time prize of a randomly generated level 1 treasure ring. It can be up to +5 in power, so you'll want to save right before you click on the "Flower" and restore if you don't get something really good.  [5]

    * In Ravenshore, there's a "Tree" behind Reaver's home in town (east of the giant crystal). When you click on it, it'll find the first potion it can in your inventories (going in a left-to-right, top-to-bottom order), empty it out, and hand you back the empty potion bottle. This can be useful if you have potions you don't want and would rather have empty potion bottles, but be careful not to let this drunken tree slurp up your best potions.

    * Flemming Upjohn of Arhus, Denmark recently alerted me to the presence of a "Tree" in the Ravenshore area which rivals the obelisk treasure in value and is much easier to raid. Find the large bridge that crosses the river a ways north and west of the town, then look for this "Tree" along the riverbank just west of the bridge's south end. It's one of those droopy-looking willow trees, and you'll probably get the attention of a pack or two of Dire Wolves as you search for it. When you find it, click on it to open it up like a treasure chest and find a random artifact item plus some other stuff. The tree is trapped, but a Disarm Trap skill of 2 will open it safely. (NOTE: The artifact is randomly chosen when you first sail to Ravenshore from Dagger Wound Island.)

    * David (penguinmaestro) also recently told me about another "Tree" that's just NW of the scuzzy, dirty NW section of the town of Ravenshore. In particular, it's the closest tree that's NW of Jack's Hovel. It works just like the "Palm tree" on Dagger Wound Island.  [3]

    * The most useful secret plant in Alvar is the "Pine tree" that's up on a mountain near the very NW corner of the map. Find the ogre camp up there that has a cauldron, then search for the tree west of that. Click on it over and over again to get an unlimited number of boost potions. They have no power rating (unless you mix them with catalyst potions), but are still useful for two things: mixing with other potions (requires someone with a GM in Alchemy) and selling. You can use them as an unlimited money gimmick by getting a bunch, selling them in town, getting more and selling them, etc.  [7]

    * The other "Pine tree" is in the wasp-infested mountain-top area that's SE of town. Find the local obelisk up there, then head directly SE to find the tree. It gives the same kind of one-time ring prize as Dagger Wound's "Flower."  [5]

    * There's a "Cactus" in the Ironsand Desert area SE of the Troll village. To find it, search a short way SE of Sethrc Thistlebone's home. Unfortunately, it only gives a one-time cheap potion ingredient or empty bottle.  [3]

    * Murmurwoods has a very interesting "Tree" a ways north of the village. It's actually pointed to by a bunch of small white stones in the form of an arrow. At one end of the arrow is the poison well, and near the other end is the "Tree." When you click on it, it searches the current character's inventory for any of the ten kinds of gems in the game. If it finds one, it will trade you something for the gem. Use the table below to see what you can get for each type of gem. Some trades aren't worth it (like trading in an emerald for an apple), but some really are (like trading all zircons for citrines, then all citrines for amethysts, and then all amethysts for emeralds).

    Gem        Trade Item      Comments
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zircon     Citrine         Citrines are worth 500 gold more than Zircons
Iolite     Walking Boots   The boots are cheap and worth much less than the Iolite
Citrine    Amethyst        Another good trade with a 500 gold increase in value
Amber      Swift Potion    The potion is worth 250 gold less than the gem, and has no power rating
Amethyst   Emerald         The third (and last) in the +500 gold value line
Topaz      random item     The items vary widely in type and in value
Emerald    Apple           The most useless and costly trade, even if you're out of rations
Sapphire   2,000 gold      Sapphires are worth exactly 2,000 gold, so no big thrill here
Ruby       Rejuvenation    The potion is worth 250 gold less than the ruby
Diamond    Horseshoe       Diamonds are worth 3,000 gold, but the skill points can be more useful
