Might and Magic IX Hints
Why is there a "Minisaves" directory in addition to the "SaveGames" directory?
of 9: Just to complicate things, no doubt.
of 9: If you don't know what I'm referring to, use Windows Explorer to go under the "Program FilesDO\Might and Magic IX" directory on your hard drive. You'll see several subdirectories, one of which is named "SaveGames" and another of which is named "Minisaves".
of 9: This is important for any of you who want to back up your saved games to use again at another time or on another computer. You need to make a complete backup of both the "SaveGames" and the "Minisaves" directories.
of 9: Also, you can use "Minisaves" to do a bit of cheating, or to reset an area that you've badly messed up in (like if you make the monks in the Lindisfarne Monastery mad before you finish their quests).
of 9: Notice that the files in "Minisaves" appear in groups, each of which is named after a region of the game that you've been to.
of 9: What do you think would happen if you deleted all the files for a region? (NOTE: Before you do this, make a backup of the files, or just move them to another folder instead of deleting them.)
of 9: I'll tell you what happens. It makes the game "forget" that you were ever in that region! This effectively forces a total regeneration of the region except for quest-related things, which are kept track of in the files in the "SaveGames" directory. (You usually don't want to delete anything in there, though deleting the .MM9 file for a save can sometimes cause the area you're in to regenerate.)
of 9: You can use this to repeatedly plunder a region of something particularly valuable that doesn't regenerate (or at least doesn't regenerate quickly). Simply enter the region, take what you want, exit the region, delete that region's files from the "Minisaves" directory, and then repeat as often as you like.
of 9: Note that you should never delete the "Minisaves" files for the region that your characters are currently in, or that they're in on a saved game that you're likely to restore soon. That could cause a game crash. Again, it's always safer to back up the files you're about to delete before actually deleting them. I've never had any trouble with deleting "Minisaves" files, but you never know.
