How can I get great artifact items in this game?
- 1 of 12: Unlike previous games, there are no monsters that can give artifacts as random treasure when you kill and loot them.
- 2 of 12: The main way to get artifacts is to raid black chests. Unfortunately, these black chests are usually in hard-to-get-to places, and always have fairly powerful traps on them.
- 3 of 12: If you check the Artifact Checklist, you'll see that there's a total of 62 different artifacts in the game. There aren't nearly that many black chests, but the good news is that the black chests in the Training Hall in Thjorgard and the Dragon's Lair in Lindisfarne regenerate every time you exit and reenter those areas. That'll be how you get most of your artifacts.
- 4 of 12: There are four artifacts out of the 62 that can never be found at random in black chests. They are Black's Heart, Everstrike, Spencer's Obedience, and Thjorad. Fortunately, the first three of those items can be found in special black chests, and Thjorad is in the Lindisfarne Monastery in a wall niche.
- 5 of 12: That leaves 58 artifacts to be found in regular black chests, and that's exactly how many you can get from them before they start giving only gold. The game keeps track of which of those 58 artifacts you've gotten, ensuring that you get exactly one of each. Sounds good, but unfortunately there's a problem.
- 6 of 12: The first time you enter any area that has a regular black chest in it, an artifact is chosen for that chest and put in it. That artifact is then "checked off" of your list of 58 gettable artifacts whether you go and get it or not. If the area regenerates before you open that black chest, a new artifact is put in it, and the one that was originally in it is lost forever. This also happens when you use the Minisaves cheat to eliminate an area's Minisaves files before you loot its black chest.
- 7 of 12: So if you want to be sure to get all 58 artifacts from the regular black chests, you'd better not enter any area that has such a chest unless you're sure it never regenerates or that you can get to it and open it within 30 days (which is the regen time for most areas). This means developing a level 5 expert in Disarm Trap will be a very important early goal.
- 8 of 12: NOTE: Even if you do everything right, you may only get 57 artifacts before the black chests start giving only gold. If so, don't give up. You should eventually get your last artifact.
- 9 of 12: Once you're through raiding the regular black chests, there are a few other artifact-getting possibilities left (unless you've already used them).
- 10 of 12: There are four black chests that always have the same artifact in them no matter what. See the Black Chest Locations list to find out where those chests are.
- 11 of 12: You can get a Green Man amulet by finishing the Green Man's quests in Frosgard, and you can get a randomly chosen Fre artifact from the genie in the Ruined Temple (also in the Frosgard region). And don't forget Thjorad in the Lindisfarne Monastery! It's an artifact, too.
- 12 of 12: If you're really desperate for more artifacts, you can go to the FAQs page of Klaravoyia's MM9 website (http://www.keytech.com/~klar) and download Kcwong's program. Running it will alter all your saves so that you can get more artifacts (including duplicates of most of the ones you've already gotten). Once you catch your limit again, simply run Kcwong's program again. (But as long as you're willing to edit your saved games to get more artifacts, why not use my own MM9 saved game editor program? It'll let you choose exactly which artifacts you want. See the Cheats section.)
