What are promotion quests?
  • 1 of 7: They're the ones that get your characters promoted from one class to another.
  • 2 of 7: When you start a game, you should form a pretty clear idea of what four fully promoted classes you want to end up with (see page 35 of the player manual).
  • 3 of 7: For instance, I create two fighters with the idea of them later becoming an assassin and a gladiator (or both assassins), and I create two initiates with the idea of later making them into a lich and a priest.
  • 4 of 7: However, I still seek out and do all the other promotion quests, like fighter to crusader. I just make sure that I don't volunteer any of my fighters to actually become crusaders (which is something you have to do right after getting the quest if you want to). This plan usually works, but not with all promotions. Some few of them require you to pledge a person for promotion before you can actually get the quest.
  • 5 of 7: Note that to get a promotion quest, you usually have to have someone who could be promoted. For instance, you can't get the healer-to-priest promotion quest unless you have at least one healer in your party. The first hint for each promo quest will tell what you need in order to get the quest.
  • 6 of 7: In order to be able to do all the promo quests in one playthrough of the game, you'll need to make at least two of your starting characters initiates with the goal of promoting one to priest and one to lich. As long as you do that, you'll be able to get and complete all the other promo quests at some point in the game.
  • 7 of 7: A very important note about promo quests is to complete them as soon as you possibly can after getting them. There's a really bad game glitch that might cause you to not get promoted when you finish the quest. This happened to me once on the fighter-to-mercenary quest, and I had to restore a game from way, way back in order to avoid having to restart entirely. The only thing I could figure out was that I'd done too much other stuff between getting the quest and finishing it.
