Might and Magic IX Hints
I keep getting killed right away!
1 of 6: That's because this is one tough area.
2 of 6: You can enter it as soon as you reach the Isle of Ashes and stomp around to where the ruins are, but you won't be anywhere near ready at that time, being only level 1 wimps.
3 of 6: Later in the game, you can sail back here from Guberland, Thjorgard, or Thronheim and do the ruins.
4 of 6: However, don't totally ignore them now. There are three treasure chests that you can get to if you're a little daring.
5 of 6: You might want to save your game right before (not right after) entering the Verhoffin Ruins because what you find in the treasure chests is randomly chosen the first time you enter the ruins. If you go in and don't get very useful stuff, restore and repeat until you do. It's extremely high-level treasure by beginning standards.
6 of 6: Actually, there's a fourth treasure chest that you can successfully raid, though you have to dodge some Zombies to do it. From the easiest-to-get-to treasure chest, hop into the water and then climb back out of it to the east. Go north down the hallway, save your game, and open the last door on the right. Inside the room are three Zombies and a treasure chest hidden behind a knocked-over table in the SE corner of the room. If you're fast and lucky enough, you can raid the chest and get out without any casualties. (The turn-based mode tips in the General Combat Tips can help with this.)
