Fix the refinery machine.
  • 1 of 12: Talk to Njal Bjarnissen in the room east of the machine to get this quest (but only if you have Jarl Sven's quest on you to find out why Thjorad production has stopped).
  • 2 of 12: He told you that someone in Thjorgard City named Hjarrand the Fixer might know how to fix the thing.
  • 3 of 12: He's the dwarf in the huge and fancy house in the SW section of the city.
  • 4 of 12: But before you go talk to him, why don't you look over the refining machine yourself? It's just west of Njal's room.
  • 5 of 12: If you go around to the north side of the machine and use the leftmost panel, it will open.
  • 6 of 12: Take the broken slag extractor from the machine, then go see Hjarrand in the city. (Taking the extractor to him now saves you $1,000 and an extra trip to the mines and back, though it'll stick you with a "permanent" journal entry for this quest.)
  • 7 of 12: Talk to Hjarrand about getting a new slag extractor, and he'll send you to Gunnar Thjorsmith.
  • 8 of 12: He's the guy in the armor shop that's just a little ways south of the Jarl's castle.
  • 9 of 12: Talk to him to get a replacement slag extractor.
  • 10 of 12: Now return to the mine and put the new slag extractor into the refining machine.
  • 11 of 12: Use the little brown thing behind the panel to place the new slag extractor.
  • 12 of 12: Now you can go report success to Njal.
