The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Hints

Is there any way to break into the vaults in the Great House compounds?

  • 1 of 8: Yes, if your Sneak and Security skills are fairly high.
  • 2 of 8: After entering the vault section of the compound, find the vault door you want to open and save your game in front of it.
  • 3 of 8: Then go into Sneak mode and either use a lockpick, a spell, or a spell scroll (like Ekash's Lock Splitter) to attempt to unlock the gate. If you're caught doing it, then restore and try again.
  • 4 of 8: If you're caught after successfully unlocking a gate, you may just want to pay the fine and surrender your stolen goods (and make amends with the house later if you were a member). After all, what's past the gate is far more valuable.
  • 5 of 8: Another alternative is finding the keys to the gates.
  • 6 of 8: Once you're inside the vault, leave the door open and wait for the guards to wander out. When they do, close the door, and the vault is yours! (This doesn't apply to the Telvanni vault, which is constructed differently. You'll have to use Sneak mode to steal stuff from it.)
  • 7 of 8: Each vault is full of gold coins, jewels, and incredibly valuable armor and weapons. Be sure to take all the coins and jewels, but don't get too excited about all the supercool gear. It's way too heavy to carry around all at once, and there are no merchants who can afford to buy it. Just take what you can equip and use, and leave the rest. (After all, these vaults are basically yours now, you know.)
  • 8 of 8: NOTE: If you're impatient to get into the vaults, and can't successfully pickpocket the keys or unlock the doors, you can use the console's TCL command to walk right through the doors. Of course, you'd then have to sneak while stealing anything so the guards don't see you do it.
