The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Hints

The Imprisonment of Mastrius

  • 1 of 10: Go to the Salvel Ancestral Tomb (location 15 on the Dagoth Ur map) and talk to Mastrius about "my imprisonment" and "way to escape" to get this quest. (Note that the tomb is inside the Ghostfence, a long ways away from the Ghostgate.)
  • 2 of 10: NOTE: If Mastrius is lying panting on the floor when you find him, you can't talk to him. Try exiting and reentering the tomb. If he turns hostile, you'll need to cast a Calm Humanoid spell on him in order to talk to him.
  • 3 of 10: Mastrius has been imprisoned by Azura, and needs two things to help him escape.
  • 4 of 10: One of them is a Daedra's heart, which you can get by killing various Daedric creatures like Clannfear, Daedroth, Dremora, Hungers, and Golden Saints. You can also buy or steal them in many alchemy and apothecary shops.
  • 5 of 10: The other item is a very specific shield called Spell Breaker.
  • 6 of 10: It's in the Dwemer ruin Bthuand at location 6 on the Dagoth Ur map. (Note that it's north of the Ghostfence, so the fastest way to get there is to levitate over the Ghostfence and head north.)
  • 7 of 10: Find the room with the dead adventurer in it, then search a rubble-blocked passage nearby to find the shield. (Note that it won't be there unless you have the quest to get it from Mastrius.)
  • 8 of 10: Go turn Spell Breaker and a Daedra's heart over to Mastrius and agree to lend him your strength to help him break free.
  • 9 of 10: Only trouble is, after draining half your health and fatigue, he'll turn right around and attack you. He's a level 29 vampire and is very tough to handle at half-strength.
  • 10 of 10: If you manage to kill him, you can reclaim Spell Breaker and get Mastrius' nice suit of ebony armor.
