Myst III: Exile Hints
How do I deactivate a force field?
of 12: The lever that you pull to summon the ball isn't the only thing on the control panel to this puzzle.
of 12: There is also a set of oddly shaped gears on the panel.
of 12: If you'd like, you can press the lights near each gear. This won't help you when the ball is on the tracks, but at least you can get some idea of what's going on.
of 12: Look at the track instead of the control panel when the lights go off.
of 12: Specifically, look at the lights on the tusks that are above each ring.
of 12: Some of those lights may go off when you press one of the control panel's lights.
of 12: And when you summon the ball, a marble will come out of the panel and move from gear to gear, turning off one light at a time as it moves between the gears.
of 12: Have you seen the gear shapes elsewhere?
of 12: Walk onto the platforms next to each force field ring (behind the ring as you're looking from the center of the puzzle), and you'll see a dial on each platform.
of 12: Each dial has the same five gears, and they're in the same position as on the control panel -- in other words, the shape that appears in the 12-o'clock position of the control panel is also at the 12-o'clock position on the dial.
of 12: You don't think that's a coincidence, do you?
of 12: Whenever a dial points to the same shape that the marble is currently in, the corresponding force field is temporarily deactivated. (For example, when the marble is at 12 o'clock, any force field whose dial is set to 12 o'clock will be deactivated.)
