Myst IV: Revelation Hints
How can I get rid of the Mangrees on the one totem pole?
of 12: You need to be able to see the symbol on this totem pole, but the frisky Mangrees are making it impossible. You're going to need a way to clear them away for a brief period, just long enough to look at the totem symbol.
of 12: First, you'll need to find the location where you can get the best view of what they're doing.
of 12: Once you are in the hunting post, you will find three wheels in front of you. Experiment with the three wheels.
of 12: Turning each of the wheels produces a different sound -- low, medium, or high.
of 12: The Mangrees respond to tonal sounds as a "language".
of 12: You need to "warn" the Mangrees away. Where have you seen a Mangree who might have been giving a "warning call"?
of 12: As you were approaching the hunting post, a Mangree crossed your path, making a three-tone call.
of 12: You can go back to where the Mangree crossed your path and hear the three-tone call. Go back to where you left the path to go towards the hunting post (remember the place with the red plants that you had to move aside?). Now, take one step away from the end of the path. You should hear a Mangree in this location.
of 12: The Mangree call was a warning to the other Mangrees. Achenar developed a fairly good rapport with the Mangrees, even to the point of beginning to learn a bit about their calls. Perhaps you could try to reproduce that call, using the wheels in the hunting post.
of 12: Reproducing the sound may take a little practice, as the interface to the three wheels is a bit touchy. You'll need to play one tone (wheel), and then fairly quickly move to the next one. Too much delay switching between wheels and the sound won't be close enough. (The hand cursor may be a bit difficult to "catch" on each wheel, but it will come with practice.) There is no penalty for trying again!
of 12: The left wheel produces the lowest tone, the middle wheel a medium tone, and the right wheel a high tone.
of 12: The correct succession is: right wheel, left wheel, right wheel. Remember to spin the right wheel a bit longer (both times) then the left one. Try turning the right wheel approximately 3/4 of a turn (or a whole turn, if you spin it a quicker), then the left wheel approximately a quarter (or a half turn), then the right wheel again -- 3/4 of a turn (or a whole turn). This may take a few tries -- just keep practicing.
