Myst IV: Revelation Hints
How do I unlock the gate?
of 13: Note the panel to the left of the gate. Be sure and view the "memory" associated with this location.
of 13: Open the panel to reveal the locking mechanism. To open the panel, you'll need to grab the bottom of the blank panel and slide it up. Before you start working on this puzzle, you may wish to save your game (to serve as a "reset point" for working on the puzzle).
of 13: Note the two small hammer-shaped objects -- one on the top and one on the bottom -- that can be moved. They can be flipped up or down, and under certain conditions can be moved left or right.
of 13: The hammers can only be moved to the left and the right while nested inside a slider.
of 13: Likewise, the sliders cannot move without a hammer.
of 13: There are some limits as to where the sliders can be moved -- even with a hammer. The center slider can generally move a hammer quite freely.
of 13: The slider in the top row and the slider in the bottom row will only allow you to move the hammer between certain sections of their row of the lock.
of 13: For the slider in the top row, if the hammer is placed in the left-most space (of the lock, not the slider), the slider cannot be moved at all. For the next three spaces from the left (of the lock), the hammer cannot be moved outside this group. For the two right-most spaces (of the lock) the hammer also cannot be moved outside of this group.
of 13: For the bottom row, the slider cannot be moved if the hammer is in the right-most space (of the lock, not the slider). If the hammer is in on of the two left-most spaces (of the lock), the hammer cannot be moved beyond this group. For the remaining three spaces (3, 4, and 5; from the left), the hammer also cannot be moved outside this group.
of 13: Note the two ivory spaces -- one on the top and one on the bottom. Coincidence?
of 13: To unlock the gate, each hammer must be resting on one of the ivory spaces.
of 13: In addition, the hammers cannot be inside any of the sliders for the gate to open. In other words, they must rest on the ivory spaces -- but outside the top and bottom sliders.
of 13: To accomplish this, you will need to make use of the sliders on each of the three rows, and move the hammers to the proper positions so that they can make contact with the ivory spaces. You will need to open and close the hammers, and shuffle the three sliders back and forth, to get the correct hammers over the ivory spaces.
