Myst IV: Revelation Hints

Hints for using the wheels to call a Mangree

  • Get very practiced with using the wheels to generate the long and short tones.  A long tone is approximately 1.5 seconds in length; a short tone should be just that -- short -- about 1/2 second.  The length of the tone is not determine by how far you turn the wheel, but by how long you keep turning it.  You can produce a long tone in less than one cycle of the wheel, by moving it more slowly.  By contrast, you can spin the wheel quickly, and it will take several revolutions to generate the same length of tone.  Be careful not to turn the wheel too slowly, or it won't make the correct tone to call the Mangree.

Get fluent with moving from wheel to wheel quickly.  You cannot delay between the two parts of a Mangree's name.  The "break" between the two tones generated to call any Mangree should be kept to a minimum.

If you try to call a Mangree, and he doesn't respond, it could be because the tone was too long, too short, the two tones were too far apart, or because one (or both) of the wheels was turned at the wrong speed.  If you don't get a response from the Mangree, it is wise to wait a couple of seconds before trying again.  If you try right away, the combination of the last tone of his name (which was just played) and the first tone of his name (which you are playing for a second time), might happen to be the name of a different Mangree.  And, if so, the wrong Mangree could end up running toward the empty enclosure.
