Myst V: End of Ages Hints
Why won't they recognize the symbol?
1 of 5: First, notice that all of the slates are different shapes -- each specific to one age. For example, if you try to use a pentagonal slate to draw a symbol that was shown inside a round slate, it won't work.
2 of 5: I also found that it typically helps to draw the symbols as large as possible -- go all the way up to the top of the slate and down to the divider line at the bottom while you're drawing.
3 of 5: It sometimes helps to exaggerate the actual figure you're drawing -- you don't always have to draw the figures you see exactly to scale. For example, if the game shows you a small open circle, you may have better luck drawing a slightly larger circle. (Otherwise, your "pen" on the slate is thick enough that your open circle may look closed or filled in.)
4 of 5: Also try to draw things that look like straight lines or continuous curves all in one motion. For example, to draw a line, you should click your mouse down once and keep the button down until you're at the end of the line. Don't pick up your "pen" (release the mouse button) halfway through and then restart the line -- it may not work. I also tended to draw larger geometric shapes (squares, etc.) in one click of the mouse.
5 of 5: Beyond that, I'd recommend just trying a few times. At the appropriate times in the hints, I will provide sketches that look more like what I've drawn than the "official" symbols. If you can't get the symbol just as the game shows it to you, you might try drawing something a little closer to my version.
