Myst V: End of Ages Hints
I can't move the handles.
1 of 3: The handles will "pop up" away from the control station when they're powered up.
2 of 3: You need to bring heat to the lake before you can use the handles. See these hints if you need to do that.
3 of 3: Remember that the steam will only be on for a limited amount of time before it turns itself off, but you can always repeat the process of drawing the steam symbol and dropping the slate. Do this as often as you need to until you've solved this puzzle.
