Myst V: End of Ages Hints
What controls the gear?
of 10: You'll find the controls if you explore a bit around the top part of this island.
of 10: Go to the center of this roof area, and you'll find an open door leading into a small room with a curved roof.
of 10: If you explore around here, you may eventually find the controls.
of 10: Why don't you close the door behind you?
of 10: If you look on the door, you'll notice a small lit button that you can click on. Click on it, and you'll see something else behind the door when it moves.
of 10: There's another button.
of 10: Press that one, and the floor on the far side from the door will fall, creating a staircase down to a new section.
of 10: Walk all the way down those stairs, and you should see a switch (which moves horizontally) and a handle (which you can pull down) on your right. The switch controls which direction the gear moves, and pulling the handle all the way down will cause the gear to move in the direction specified by the handle.
of 10: The handle won't do anything when you pull it if the tram it controls is all the way in one direction or another. (You'll see it move up, but nothing else moves.) Try setting the switch in both directions.
of 10: And if the handle still doesn't do anything, make sure you're dragging it all the way down. When you let go, it will move back up as it moves the gears. If it doesn't move back up on its own, you either need to pull it a bit further, or perhaps try "jiggling" it a bit -- even this virtual handle got stuck for me a couple of times.
