Do I really need to play it in the dark?
Almost everything in this game happens in dark places -- an old mansion with the electricity out, a rainy garden, and so on. So if you can play it in the dark, you'll find it much easier to see into the dark corners of the rooms. You don't absolutely HAVE to play it in the dark; but if you can't find things you know are there somewhere, try darkening the room and see if things don't appear.
