How do I change from Nancy to Bess, and when?
1 of 2: Switching characters works just like it did in Nancy Drew 15 ("The Creature of Kapu Cave"). That is, when you want to switch from Nancy to Bess, pull out your cell phone and call Bess; when you want to switch back, use your cell phone to call Nancy.
2 of 2: As to when, you can switch any time you want to -- if you're stuck or bored or want to hear what the other person thinks. There are a couple of times where you'll need to switch to the other person to move ahead in the game. I'll tell you when you're in a puzzle that requires help from the other person. Also, sometimes Nancy will include a comment in her journal or checklist -- "Ask Bess?" or that kind of thing.
